What Is Card Counting? A Plain-English Guide

A clear explanation of card counting in blackjack — what it is, how it works with a concrete example, whether it's legal, and whether it's worth learning.

Card counting is often explained with either breathless Hollywood flourishes or impenetrable math. The real thing sits in the middle: a disciplined habit, built on arithmetic a second-grader can handle, that turns blackjack from a small house edge against you into a small edge against the house. This is a practical overview — what counting is, how it works, whether it's legal, and whether it's worth learning.

The one-sentence version

A card counter keeps a running tally of how many high cards have left the shoe versus how many low cards have left. When the tally shows lots of high cards remaining, the player has an edge; the counter bets more. When low cards are abundant, the counter bets small and plays basic strategy.

That is it. Everything else is technique.

Why the composition of the shoe matters

Blackjack gives the player one structural advantage that other casino games do not: the player decides what to do with their hand. The dealer, by contrast, is on rails — in most games, the dealer must hit until they reach 17. The player gets to choose, the dealer cannot.

High cards (tens and aces) help the player in three specific ways:

  1. More blackjacks. A natural 21 pays 3:2 (if you avoid the 6:5 trap — see the post on that). Both sides draw from the same shoe, but only the player collects the 3:2 bonus. More tens and aces remaining means more blackjacks, which benefits the player more than the dealer.
  2. More dealer busts on stiffs. When the dealer is forced to hit a hard 12–16, high cards in the shoe raise the probability of busting. The player can choose to stand; the dealer cannot.
  3. Stronger doubles and better insurance. Doubling on 11 becomes more profitable when the next card is more likely to be a ten. Insurance crosses breakeven when roughly 1 in 3 of the unseen cards are ten-valued.

Conversely, low cards (2–6) help the dealer: they make dealer stiff hands finish safely at 17 or higher, they turn the player's doubles into weaker hands, and they reduce blackjack frequency.

When you count, you are tracking the balance between these two groups.

The Hi-Lo system — three rules

The most common system, Hi-Lo, is almost offensively simple:

You start at 0 when a fresh shoe is shuffled, and you add the value of every card you see dealt (yours, the dealer's, other players'). The sum is the running count.

To turn the running count into something actionable, divide by the number of decks still to be dealt. That gives you the true count:

TC = RC ÷ decks remaining.

A +6 RC at the start of a 6-deck shoe is essentially noise (+1 per deck, ≈+0.5% edge). The same +6 RC with one deck left is a monster (+6 TC, ≈+3% edge). Normalizing is how a running count becomes a bet trigger.

A worked example

Imagine a freshly shuffled 6-deck shoe. The first three cards off the top are 5, 10, 7.

After five minutes of play, you've seen 60 cards dealt. Your running count stands at +8. A glance at the discard tray tells you about a deck has been dealt, so five decks remain. TC = 8 ÷ 5 = +1.6 → rounded toward zero, +1.

That's a weak positive. You bet one unit, as usual.

Ten minutes later, 150 cards have been dealt. Running count now says +10. Three decks remain. TC = 10 ÷ 3 = +3.3 → +3. That's a meaningful edge. Time to bet 2–4 units.

Another few hands, and the discard tray looks like five decks. One deck left. If the RC is still +10, TC is +10 — massive. Cap out. A more realistic outcome is that the count drops as high cards come out of the shoe, and by the cut card you're back to neutral. That's normal. The edge appears briefly, irregularly, and a counter has to be ready when it does.

Is it legal?

In the United States, card counting is not illegal. It's using your brain. You are allowed to pay attention to the cards on the table. No law prohibits any particular method of mental arithmetic.

What casinos can do is refuse your action. They have the legal right to kick any player off any game at any time, for any reason other than a protected class. Once the pit figures out you're counting — the usual tells are a wide bet spread correlated with the count — they will ask you to leave, "back you off" the blackjack pit, or, in rare cases, trespass you from the property entirely.

Counting is also illegal in a few jurisdictions, notably New Jersey at one time (later overturned) and some Canadian provinces with ambiguous statutes. Check local law before grinding. But in the US, you are playing within the rules — the rules just include the casino's right not to play back.

The other practical constraint: cheating is illegal everywhere. Marking cards, using devices, or computer assistance are felonies. Mental counting is not.

Is it worth it for most people?

Honestly? Probably not, unless one of a few things is true:

For most recreational players, basic strategy alone — memorizing the mathematically optimal action for every hand against every dealer upcard, without counting — is the right stop. It cuts the house edge to under 0.5% at decent rules. That is a cheap night out by casino standards.

If you want to go further, counting comes next. But go in with eyes open: the edge is small, the variance is brutal, and the casino has the right to end the game.

How to start

Common myths worth debunking

"Card counting means memorizing every card dealt." No. You maintain a single running total; individual cards are forgotten the moment they contribute their Hi-Lo value. Your brain is tracking one integer, not a list of 52.

"You need to be a genius." You need to be accurate under mild pressure. The arithmetic is third-grade level. The hard part is maintaining focus across hours of play while also placing bets, watching the dealer, and not looking like you're counting. Consistency beats raw IQ.

"The casino will throw you in a back room." That's a 1970s Vegas story, not a modern one. Today the worst realistic outcome is being asked to leave the blackjack pit, or in rare serious cases being trespassed (banned from the property entirely). Physical detention is illegal and essentially unheard of at modern US casinos.

"Continuous shuffle machines stop counting." True — CSMs shuffle after every hand, so there's never a composition edge. Counting is impossible at a CSM table. Check which table you're sitting at before you sit down; a shoe dealt to a cut card can be counted, a CSM cannot.

"MIT-style blackjack teams still work." Team play has gotten much harder. Casinos share intelligence across properties, and computerized face-recognition shortens the window before any individual counter gets identified. Solo play with good cover and careful game selection is more realistic for beginners than elaborate team structures.

"You have to bet huge swings to make money." You have to bet enough of a swing to capture the edge. 1–8 or 1–12 spreads are plenty at reasonable stakes. Betting 1–50 doesn't help if you get backed off inside one session.

The honest summary

Card counting is real but incremental. A skilled counter wins roughly $15–40 per hour on average at a $25 unit in a decent 6D game, with heavy variance around that mean. It's a second job more than a lifestyle. Most of the effort pays back over thousands of hands, not a single trip.
